Empowering Women in Leadership
Junior Board of Directors
YWCA York is committed to creating and developing sustained leadership opportunities for diverse young women in York County.
YWCA York’s aquatics team helped Paul find purpose and a sense of community.
Paul was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a rare disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves. He went from being a healthy 78-year-old man to needing 24/7 care. Although it had been 40 years since he was in a pool, Paul agreed to give aquatics a try at the suggestion of his granddaughter, a former YWCA York Synchro swimmer.
Paul needed the chair-lift to enter the pool, but he didn’t give up. Over time, his grip strengthened, and the weights increased. After several months, Paul could use the pool steps on his own. Today, Paul has learned to swim and warms up with 38 laps before his aerobics class begins.
Paul got his life back, and we can all learn from his motto “the more you do, the more you can do”.
